As part of my Introduction to Electronic Media class, I had to make a journal covering my media use. The assignment consisted of three parts: a log that tracked my media use over the course of a week, charts/tables depicting the log data, and a written analysis of the data. I decided to track my media use from 8/30/2010 - 9/5/2010. I had 6 different types of media categories: internet, car radio, TV, radio, DVD, and book. I also included the length of time I used the media and my reason for use in the log.
Putting the log's data into chart and table form definitely helped me grasp my results better. It also made the analysis much easier. I couldn't believe how much I used the media over one week, 37 hours and 11 minutes. Perhaps more unbelievable, this is much less than the average person! My primary choice of media was the internet. I use it for research, submitting/completing school assignments, and entertainment. This may be hard to believe, but I do not have a TV. This isn't a big issue for me, however, since just about every show I watch is available for free on either the show's website or Hulu. I also tend to read a lot, although this wasn't reflected in my data since I happened to do most of my required reading for that time frame prior to August 30th and I was too busy to find time to read for pleasure. I suspect the book category would have been a lot bigger in any other week. One surprising thing was the lack of a major increase in my media usage over the weekend. Although, I do like to spend a lot of time outside, so it is easily explained.
The main thing I learned from doing this assignment was how much media is truly ever-present in people's lives. Of course I've heard this before, but it really sinks in when you analyze your own life and come up with numbers. As great as technology is, I can't help but wonder how different the world and our lives might be without it.
This blog will follow my progress through the course, Introduction to Electronic Media. Reviews of various forms of entertainment along with a look at how the media functions in my daily life will be the primary topics. There will also be posts about the assignments I undertake in the class and what I learn from them.

Welcome!
Welcome to Expressions of Media. In this blog I'll write about my experiences in my Introduction to Electronic Media (CMM101) class at Frederick Community College. There will also be the occasional review of various media types. A critique of the media and how it functions in my day to day life will be the primary focus.
But who am I? I attended high school in the Memphis, TN metro area and graduated in 2005. I then enlisted into the United States Marine Corps for five years. Most of my time was spent stateside where I was stationed in Frederick County, MD. In May 2009, I was reassigned to Camp Pendleton, CA. From there I deployed as part of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit from September 2009 - April 2010. On this deployment I went to Guam, Indonesia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Dubai, Kuwait, Bahrain, Thailand, Japan, and Hawaii. I was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps June 19, 2010. I moved back to Frederick, where I am currently living. After FCC I will transfer to Hood College and major in history. Following that, I hope to begin a career in law enforcement.
My media choices largely reflect my background and interests, though I suppose that is true of many people. I enjoy just about any book by W.E.B. Griffin. As for movies I tend to gravitate towards the works of Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, and Martin Scorsese; however, my favorites certainly aren't limited to this group. Tom Hanks is my favorite actor. My tastes in music aren't as defined. The Beatles are my favorite artists, but I listen to a wide variety of songs.
That's all for now. I hope you enjoy my thoughts, and I look forward to your comments!
